Denon AVR-2807 - AV receiver - 7.1 channel Review

Denon AVR-2807 - AV receiver - 7.1 channel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My old, stereo-only system consisted of several high-quality source components, separate tuner/preamp/amplifier, and a pair of very sweet (but rather low-efficiency) classic B&W speakers. When the preamp and amp both died after many years of service, I replaced them with the 2807, and added Polk center and surrounds for a 5.1 configuration. The 2807 makes my faithful B&W front speakers sing every bit as sweetly as my old audiophile separates did, with plenty of power to spare. Today my kids were watching Titanic with the master volume set just a wee bit high, and from two rooms away I thought the iceberg was colliding with the HOUSE. (The volume knob covers a rather impressive -80db to +18db range in 0.5dB increments). You even get TWO sets of amplified front speaker outputs, so you can bi-amp or bi-wire your main speakers if you want! And the 2807's quality is not only in the amplifier stage, but also in the DACs. CDs played through a digital input and handled by the 2807's processors are very smooth and detailed.
(If I may insert one gripe re the amplifier: the speaker binding posts are not at ALL flexible. Using spade lugs or pin connectors is pretty much out of the question. Getting the posts to even cleanly accept heavy-gauge bare wire is difficult. Banana plugs work of course, but the posts aren't spaced correctly for standard DUAL-banana plugs. Arrrgghh!)
Surround decoding and ambience processing is also generally excellent. For instance, using Dolby Pro Logic II with a stereo source like a CD generates a pretty nicely stable center image and subtle, unobtrusive surround enhancement; only occasionally will you hear things "breathe" or wander awkwardly into and out of the surround channel. It makes nearly all of my music CDs, and many TV shows, more enjoyable without calling undue attention to itself. Switching to Pure Direct mode (which is actually wonderfully clean, and is for highest-quality stereo-only handling of analog and two-channel sources) almost always sounds flat and less satisfying by comparison. Seven-channel stereo mode is also good for TV shows and CDs, giving room-filling sound with the surrounds driven nearly equally with the fronts. (There are a number of other soundfields, like Stadium, but I found most of them too gimmicky or show-offy to actually use. Stadium, for example, nicely isolates the play-by-play announcer's voice from a sportscast, and then gives it a HUGE echo that sounds like Lou Gehrig giving his farewell speech in Yankee Stadium. Just putting the announcer cleanly in the center speaker for the commentary, and boosting the ambience of the crowd in the surrounds to make you feel like you are at the game would have been a lot more usable and listenable.) DVDs I just play in straight Dolby Digital or DTS mode, both of which are handled superbly.
In addition to great sound, the other major strength of the 2807 is: inputs, inputs, and more inputs. DVD *and* Videodisc. TV *and* Satellite. Two VCR (or DVR) A/V record loops. A front panel input for your camcorder or game. Plus the usual audio in/outs: Phono, CD, Tape (and of course the internal tuner). All video sources have S-video jacks. You also get up to three component video and two HDMI ins, with upconversion, and plenty of digital audio in/outs, ALL assignable as needed. Plus, any of the inputs can be renamed on the display if needed! Don't have a laserdisc player? Use the "VDP" input for something else, and change its name accordingly. I connected my digital cable TV converter to the "DBS" input, and renamed the input "CABLE". Very slick.
The front panel of the 2807 is beautifully elegant and simple. Just power/standby, input select and volume knobs, and not much else, with all the other minutia tucked behind a (nice solid metal) flip-down panel. Sadly, the same can't be said of the learning, multi-brand remote. Some things on the remote are nicely done; the little button that chooses which component it will control (and nicely lights up the selection so you can see it) is placed perfectly where your thumb will easily find it. Same for the master volume adjustment. Nice ergonomics there. Basic functions aren't too hard to use, but the remote has enough buttons for an entire shirt factory, and after a few months, I am still trying to fathom the logic of why some things are grouped as they are, how to make it control my laserdisc player (which it theoretically should) etc. etc. And some things that SHOULD be on the remote, namely, dimming the front panel display, aren't. Plus, it doesn't have very good range. The remote that came with my cable box will easily work the 2807's volume etc. from a seat catty-corner across the room; the 2807's own remote needs to be closer and more on-angle. Most of the complaints you will hear in reviews about ease of use of the 2807 are really the fault of the remote. If after buying the 2807 you have enough left in your piggy bank for a really good programmable universal remote, it would be well worthwhile.
And while you're getting a better remote, pick up a good third-party FM antenna. I found the sensitivity of the 2807's internal FM tuner to be less than stellar, one of its few really weak points. Even strong local stations in my area don't come in all that cleanly using the (typical) cheap wire dipole antenna that is supplied.
Setup and adjustment of the 2807 is a bit tricky, but (for this computer professional) was not overly difficult. But, I did have to consult the manual frequently. For instance, I could easily find and navigate to the initial auto-setup command with the menu/right arrow/enter keys. But after getting there, it resisted all requests to actually start. Consulting the manual revealed that to actually make the auto-setup procedure GO, you have to press the LEFT arrow key at that final stage. (??!) The auto setup procedure, with supplied microphone, worked very well. It correctly identified the sizes and positions of my speakers, gave an error message when one of my surrounds had a loose wire, let me correct the issue and continue, and duly compensated for the fact that my new Polk center/surrounds are several dB more sensitive than my old B&W main speakers. Even so, I found the center speaker still WAY too prominent. Starting from the auto-setup's values, I boosted the left and right fronts slightly, and reduced the center speaker even more. Result was dialogue etc. nicely anchored in the center speaker, but it no longer sticking out like a sore thumb.
If you compare the Amazon pages for the Denon 3806 and 2807, noting the percentages of which item is bought after viewing both, you can easily see that with the 2807 Denon has hit a really sweet value point, giving you a lot of bang for the buck, with plenty of power and features but without useless frills. The differences between the 2807 and 3806 (an extra 10 watts per channel, the Denon Link multi-channel digital input for Denon's high-end DVD players, three-room/three source, touchscreen remote) are not worth several hundred more dollars for 99% of ordinary consumers. I had been considering the 3806, but when the 2807 came out, my choice was immediately clear.
Overall, the 2807 is a jewel. A beautiful sounding, solidly-built, top-quality component. Everyone in my family is thrilled with it. Its minor drawbacks are just that, minor. Highly recommended.
PS: I will repeat the comments of others about making sure to purchase the unit from an authorized merchant (I bought mine from Crutchfield) in order to have a valid warranty from Denon.

I was so pumped to get this, but when I got it home, it turns out that they have had some sort of a corporate breakup with the ONLY company that makes the software that runs it.
So you receive the scratch amp and "Traktor 2" in the box, but you will soon find that it is NOT compatible with Intel Macs. SO guess what! You can't use it. Native Instruments won't help you either, you are out of luck.
Stanton claims that they have made it "Open Source" and someone will soon step up with new software...it's been a few years now...NOTHING.
You'll never get it to work. Stanton should be ashamed of themselves for basically tricking consumers in to buying up their dead backstock of this useless product.
It's already dead on MAC. It will never be updated for WINDOWS.AVOID THIS AT ALL COSTS.

Sony SDM-HX73/B 17" LCD Monitor (Black) Review

Sony SDM-HX73/B 17 LCD Monitor (Black)
Average Reviews:

Just got this monitor along with my new HP m470n Media Center PC. Works great!! My previous was a Philips 17" CRT. There were no dead pixels, and the clarity is great. Very bright and clear images.
Make sure you install the drivers from the CD, and in particular, go through the display optimization steps for both Media Center as well as on the Sony CD itself. Otherwise the factory default settings may not get it right. I also found that the TV picture is clearest when it takes up one quadrant of the screen; otherwise you need to move back further.
Net/net I am very happy with the monitor.

Some monitors are serious workhorses, some are frilly playboys, and some, like the SDM-HX73, strike exactly the right balance. Supplying digital and analog data transfer (and including the necessary cables for both), you'll find all your images improved, from family movies to complex video games and web sites, thanks to vividly contrasting colors, smooth video transfer, and impressively fast response.
The monitor also does an excellent job with serious tasks. A native resolution of 1,280 x 1,024, fine 0.264 mm dot pitch, 500:1 contrast ratio, and 400 nits of brightness work together behind the scenes to provide cleanly legible graphics and text that will keep you reading comfortably for hours. Sony's optimization technology automatically adjusts the screen to varying lighting conditions, while Automatic ImageSet keeps the display set precisely the way you like it.
A softly curved base and shimmering frame create a subtle backdrop, outlining the display without detracting from the work at hand. Sony backs the display with a three-year warranty covering parts, labor, and backlight.

Canopus ADVC-100 Advanced Digital Video Converter, Analog / DV Review

Canopus ADVC-100 Advanced Digital Video Converter, Analog / DV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Following my order of the ADVC-100 I found many disturbing things on the internet. Most users had difficulties capturing analog to MPEG2 for burning onto DVD. Don't let yourself be scared off. Fear mongers stating that the converter captures DV files which then have to be converted to MPEG2 aren't using the right interface software. The ADVC-100 is a stand alone external unit without a software suite of its own and relies on whatever captures software you choose. I could just be lucky but both My WinProducer and my Nero Burning software detect the device instantly and allow choices of AVI, DV or MPEG2 format for file capture.
Granted, having an external device may not be as convenient as a VIVO internal card, but compared to other external capture boxes the ADVC-100 is tiny and unobtrusive. Better yet, it's IEEE Firewire compliant as opposed to the 1.0 and 2.0 USB connections that for the most part fall short with frame droppings and miss-synced audio during capture.
If you're looking for a straight forward plug and play unit this is it. Just make sure that you have a capture card with Firewire input capabilities such as the Sound Blaster Audigy series before purchasing this product.

2-Port PCIe x1 to SATA RAID controller Review

2-Port PCIe x1 to SATA RAID controller

If your goal is a true hardware RAID1 mirror, and motherboard provides just a PCI Express X1 interface (not X4, and not even X2) then there are not that many options available - I could identify just two, 3Ware 9650SE-2LP and this ARC1200 card from Areca. It's an excellent RAID controller, very compact and quiet (except for a relatively loud beep at POST), supports SATA, SATA2 and SATA2/NCQ hard drives. Windows XP Service Pack 3 needs a driver - can be installed either from accompanying CD, or downloaded from manufacturer's web site. CentOS / Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 has the latest driver included, thus no need for driver disk during installation of the operating system. Highly recommended!

This Xeon does everything that the Quad Core Desktop processor doesn't it replaced. Let me tell you folks, if you put a Q6600 G0 stepping and this X3380 side by side, the clocks might look identical but you add the work load and the Xeon will leave the Q6600 in the dust. I know that was a runon from you know where but you get the picture! Buy this Processor you will not regret it!! Runs VM Ware Workstation 7 or ESX 4.0 like a champ. Multithreaded applications will bow down to the 12Mb of cache and 1333Mhz bus. I am currently just running it on a ASUS Maximus Formula II with 8gig of Patriot Viper memory. AWESOME!!!!

Panasonic PV-GS320 3.1MP 3CCD MiniDV Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Average Reviews:

My wife and I purchased this item to film our family events over the coming years. After a lot of research I narrowed it down to this and the Sony DCR-HC96 (in fact several online reviews compared these two as well). It came down to price, which was better at Circuit City. Unfortunatly I will be paying a 15% restocking fee now as we have decided to return it and go with the Sony. The Panasonic, I feel, is a really good camera. The colors are bright and crisp...during the day. However we felt that most of the use would be during the evening hours indoors. With all three lamps turned on in our living room, "Auto" mode showed faint images and shadows when not pointed close to a light source. After several adjustments in "manual" mode we managed to get a decently lit picture on the viewfinder (...the picture will not show up as bright on your tv). Poor lighting is a big problem with Digital Camcorders, so I was actually somewhat content with this picture quality. Where this camcorder falls short IMO is the lack of an onboard lightsource. It has a "cold shoe" on the top where you can add your own light. However it will have to run on it's own batteries since it's not powered by the camera (also the only lights I have found so far are on ebay). Knowing that this is a problem with every brand of camcorder, I simply don't understand why companies insist on not putting better, if any, light sources on their equipment. Oh well...at least the Sony has a "hot shoe" to add a light source if needed.
Overall I think that this is a VERY nice camcorder...if you plan on staying in well lit areas. Just my two pennies worth :)

I have an NX 7010. They are not the fastest computers in the world, but for my has a 1.70 GHZ Processor, it works very well. It's pretty fast for a processor that size. The internal wireless card has some issues, so I use my Belkin wireless card in the pcmcia notebook card slot instead and it's pretty fast on the internet. Other than that everything works.
The built in DVD/CD burner works beautifully but is not the fastest either, not the most ideal for the office if your trying to make a lot of DVD/CD's in a hurry. There's a built in S -Video output so you can hook it to your TV. Does make a great travel PC. I can run multiple applications at once without slowing it down. I use mine to control robots, USB RC helicopters, check the weather and e -mail all at the same time, and it doesn't slow my laptop down a bit. The built in SD memory card slot only works with regular SD cards. It will not read the newer High capacity cards, for this you need a USB SD reader. Runs very quiet. Runs quiet well with XP Pro. Probably could handle Vista or even Windows 7 with proper memory upgrade. The keyboard and mouse are bit delicate, not the most heavy duty, so I'd be gentle to make them last. The sound is impeccable for a laptop, with it's embedded speakers that really throw good sound quality at you. Very easy to get drivers for from hp.com.
Over all, a great machine for home or the office or business travel. I own 1 Dell and 3 HP's, The NX 7010 is most used, because I love to check e - mail in bed and in my car while it's warming up for work in the morning. It's important to make sure that the machine you buy has the hardrive connector already installed. This is a hard to find part for this laptop.
Defiantly recommend purchasing this product but make sure you keep or buy your Notebook wireless card in case the internal wireless card doesn't work right.

I have this screen in 100" size and think it is a great value for the money compared to the Stewart Firehawk. I use this screen with the Sharp 10K DLP projector.

For the price, this microscope was an absolute steal. Lens quality were great, as image quality goes, I could not tell the difference between this 500$ microscope and the 1,300$ Motic microscope used at the university. As for the lighting, the 1,300$ microscope beat this one out. There's this very slight yellow tinge, even with the blue filter on, but at the price, I really have no complaints since I can see everything that I need to see without blur. This microscope couldn't adjust the contrast, but never claimed it could, and I'm not rating it lower because it can't. I haven't tried out the digital connection yet but so far everything was as promised.

I just got this a few days ago, finally, ordering from newegg.com. The unit has a very rich look, Apple design like which is great. The performance is fantastic. Very snappy and put my Dell Zino HD to shame. The machine runs very cool, it gets only slightly warm after hours of being on and playing BD rips.
Also, I was able to bitstream (DTS-MA Dolby True HD) via HDMI with my blu-ray rips which is the whole reason why I bought this awesome unit in the first place. I am using ffdshow and mpc-hc to successfully bitstream.
Playing full HD 1080p ripped content like Avatar m2ts and MKVs and the video is just stunning with very low CPU usage. Haven't played with Flash contents yet but who cares. Say goodbye to your Intel Atom boxes.

Only hiccup was the Ram timings were defaulted to slower than spec, easy to fix took 1 minute.
once installed, I noticed that the usual complaint of people about cpu coolers affecting ram DIMMS, does not seem to be the case with the tower 120 and even the ripjaws extended heat shrouds.
the included overclocking software is handy, saved me a little time, automatically stress testing and configuring the cpu to the new 3.7ghz clockspeed, as well as the ram. You can further push these, but the initial step was more than enough.
Would have liked to see the LCD error code display screen like a few other boards I have used feature, but the error LEDs can actually make for an easier time to diagnose.
The included probe software also reports a different temp for the cpu than the bios does, about 2-4*C in fact, BIOS reading higher than the windows software. it's good enough for a rough estimate however.
all in all a great board.
sidenote about sata3, usb3:
both of these being activated involve taking bandwidth away from the pci slot, dropping it down from x16... activating which is more important is a key choice you have to make when picking drive speed (sata), peripheral speed (usb3) or graphics speed (pci)... it's a downfall of the 1156 architecture, not of the board...
would certainly use this board again.

Triple Monitor Horizontal Table Stand Review

Triple Monitor Horizontal Table Stand

This is perhaps the best thing I have purchased in my entire life. I have 3x24 inch Dell flat panels and they were just too low before. I got the 38 inch extension pole which is probably overkill, since I have the monitors mounted about half way up, but I didn't want to have to worry about needing a bigger pole later. The stand itself is very sturdy, and my monitors stay very secure with very little wobble. If you have large monitors you need mounted, I highly recommend this stand.

M&S SYSTEMS DMC-10KIT DMC10 SERIES INTERCOM SYSTEM PACKAGE Review

MandS SYSTEMS DMC-10KIT DMC10 SERIES INTERCOM SYSTEM PACKAGE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This M&S system is absolutely great. It uses Cat5 or Cat6 wire and performs flawlessly. If you install it yourself you need to be familiar with structured wiring and you must know how to punch down on a 110 block. It can support a maximum of 16 stations including doors and patio. There is an audio input option which allows you to plug in any audio source for listening at all stations. A door chime is built in for up to 3 doors and it also supports remote door unlock. It sure beats the older 3 or 6 wire intercon systems. This system is truely the direction of future home intercom.
