This macro lens is usable hand-held in many situations. My Nikon, a D90, is capable of shooting at ASA 800 and above without serious noise. This means I have a few f-stops in hand from the VR and from the ASA. I have spent some time "practicing" in my backyard learning the ins and outs of this fine lens. Prints are 13"x19" so it is rather easy to see and appreciate what this 85mm is doing. The price is right if you are using a DX camera (one with a less than 35mm sensor). Some tips are the following : 1) if your not using a tripod, make sure you are solid, e.g., sit on the ground and/or keep your upper arms glued to your body, otherwise the VR wont help much at close distances, 2) pay lots of attention to focus since close up depth-of-field is close to zilch, 3) use as small an aperture as possible consistent with enough shutter speed to "freeze" the picture-count VR for a stop or two, 4) remember when you are up close outdoors there is a very good chance you shadow is in the way-either move or wait until the sun has moved. Finally enjoy discovering a world of fascinating color and textures surrounding you that you might have escaped your attention before you had this tool to use.

I received my Tokina 12-24mm DXII wide angle lens very quickly. I could not wait to put it through some paces even though I was hesitant at first to try anything but Nikon lenses. I use a Nikon D90 and this lens is flawless with it. The auto focus is very quiet and responsive. I ran it through the gamut of fstops at every setting from 12mm to 24mm. My results indicate that it is a little soft wide open but quickly sharpens as you progress through the settings. At 14-15 mm seems to be very sharp. The colors are true and vibrant. I took over a hundred pictures at church, mostly outside, both in the shade and sunshine. I did not see any distortion or chromatic aberrations. If there were any, my camera must have corrected them automatically. I probably should mention I compared this lens to my Nikon 18-105mm with VR, side by side and picture for picture, at all settings. The Tokina is actually sharper at 18mm than the Nikon 18-105. Up to and including 24mm, they both were very good. This was a pleasant surprise to me and I would not hesitate to recommend this lens to anyone who might being trying to decide whether to purchase it.

The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Lens is exclusively designed for use with SLR cameras that use the smaller APS-C size sensor. This lens provides a super wide-angle zoom range, ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography. This updated "II" version benefits from improved multi-coating technology, which helps to reduce reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The Focus Clutch Mechanism feature - a signature of Tokina PRO series lenses - provides a faster, smoother autofocus operation, with a smooth manual focus action not normally found in autofocus lenses. Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design, to correct for spherical aberrations. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing.FEATURES:Fast, ultra-wide angle zoom lens with a constant f/4 apertureTwo aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performanceFast internal focusing with the one-touch Focus Clutch MechanismLong focus travel for easy, accurate manual focusingThe rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

Nikon MB-D11 Multi-Power Battery Pack for Nikon D7000 Digital SLR Camera (Retail Packaging) Review

Nikon MB-D11 Multi-Power Battery Pack for Nikon D7000 Digital SLR Camera (Retail Packaging)

The Nikon D7000 camera has pro performance capability, but lacks the larger pro body of cameras like the D300s. Some may not find this a problem, but I have large hands and I find the smaller body of the D7000 is not as comfortable to use as a larger body. The excellent solution was the Nikon MD-D11, which is a combination vertical grip and battery pack. Two battery trays are supplied, so you have the option of using either one Nikon EN-EL15 battery or AA batteries. You also have the option of keeping a back-up battery in the camera body as well. A soft case is supplied for the tray you are not using, but it is too small for the grip itself. The grip pack has some of the same controls on it as the camera body, but the main controller is a joystick rather than the round pad type used on the camera and is great for selecting focus points in vertical or horizontal position. The grip is well made of lightweight metal alloy that has a rigid solid feeling. The grip area and bottom is covered in rubber and the bottom has a screw hole for use with a tripod.
Conclusion: The Nikon MB-D11 grip/pack is a high quality accessory that improves the handling and comfort of the D7000 to such a great degree that I leave this lightweight grip attached to my D7000 all the time now, even when I don't need the extra battery power. It's a little expensive, but it is well worth having, especially if you have large hands. Highly recommended!
