Gateway's LT3103u isn't available in stores anymore: the model has been updated since the Windows 7 Launch which gets rid of the Vista Albatross. (Personally, I liked Vista, but I can't argue with Windows 7's slightly better response times.)
The hardware is sound for it's purpose: it's a subnetbook technically from the specs... It has a 11.6 LED screen, 250 GB Hard Disk, 2 GB of memory and a 64-bit Athlon processor that's "off the roadmap" (It's a single core Sempron L110 more or less.) Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player run well in tandem, although on occasion there's a skip from the Hard Disk seek when it loads the next song if Internet Explorer is occupied with Flash or something. This can handle a good number of windows if you have simple multitasking demands.
If you want to encode video, transfer large bits of data, or play games actively (meaning DirectX titles, not 2d stuff like Solitare and the like) then you'd do better with another machine, but it's foolish to buy a subnote/netbook for those things in the first place. This is for Living Room browsing, taking to work for meal breaks, or recreational use and low demand gaming (my other netbooks play fairly well with Warcraft III, this joins the ranks well).
Two picadillos I do have:
1) Build quality is well made, but there's some "Soft" points in the chassis that creaks when pressure is applied. The keyboard is generously sized, nice for bigger hands like mine (being 6' tall and on a budget sucks when you need an affordable computer... Most netbooks have unusable keyboards as far as I'm concerned) but I would be remiss if I didn't admit that the certain keys like the space bar and the right side toggle keys I don't use have noisy spring mechanisms (we're not talking decibels here, but there is an audible squeak if I press it on the right side. It comes and goes.
2) The battery. Again, there's multiple points on this one... First of all, it's six cell, but weak. Battery life is approx over two hours unplugged on the Balanced power plan. The Power Saver plan is useless; your machine will be too crippled to even run Word. High Performance, you get about 90 minutes before the machine blacks out. For a netbook, this is unacceptable: most Atoms get about 4-5 hours at LEAST. Furthermore, good luck finding the battery. No one sells a spare one, I've tried. Gateway keeps escalating my inquiry into purchasing one, and not calling me back.
Then again their customer service sucks, I knew that going into the purchase... that's not really a "con". They charge $20 for the recovery DVD's that the machine can't use without an external burner anyway, and their EULA states that changing your OS voids your warranty. Most manufacturers offer limited support for netbooks anyway, there's so little margin on them that if you have a problem, the only recourse is a replacement machine (within 90 days), or just eat the cost and get another netbook, or pony up for a better laptop next time. Netbooks are the Honda Civics of computers.
But overall, I am very happy with this machine. :D

I was after a new netbook (owned an EEE 701)and thought I would go with the Dell this time around.
I found the Dell the most attractive package in early 2010 for the follwoing reasons:
1. comes with the new Atom 450 (should be a little more nergy efficient)
2. the 6-cell battery gives me more air time than the 3-cells batteries in so many other netbooks.
3. the keyboard is a pleasure to type on quickly.
4. the case is not only pretty but sturdy. No noticable flexing of any kind under pressure.
5. the screen is nice, colors vibrant.
6. touchpad is of a nice and usable size.
I've been using the Mini now for a couple of days and I'm not disappointed. I use it for light web surfing, emails, and typing (the classic core apps of a netbook). In addition, I use it for streaming music under my Zune subscription.
My expectations are met. Windows Starter only seems a bit of a bottleneck in terms of included (or lacking) features compared to Home or Professional. I couldn't figure out how to back up the Mini via a mapped network drive and as it stands, it must be a missing (or blocked) feature due to Windows 7 Starter Edition. Upgrading seems the better choice if one really wants to use the Mini for sharing and streaming at home.

Dell Inspiron iM1012-687AWH 10.1-Inch Netbook (Alpine White) Review

Dell Inspiron iM1012-687AWH 10.1-Inch Netbook (Alpine White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've not been a fan of that many netbooks out there, but this little guy really blew me away. I got to compare this netbook up against netbooks from ASUS, Acer, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Gateway (a pretty exhaustive line-up). There was a sharp contrast between Dell's Mini 10 series and netbooks made by the other companies. To me, the buying decision really came down to comfort and ingenuity of its design. I find others choosing this model mostly for the same reasons.
===== It's Comfortable =====
This thing is a dream to use. Most netbooks are unusable to me. What stings me most with netbooks is the keyboard. I'm used to the low-profile, "chiclet-style" scissor-switch keyboards that are (or at least used to be) most common in laptops, and in fact I love them. I'm referring to the type of keys that are flat and flush with the palm rest, and have a little flange or lip on the edges (where the space is between the keys). To see exactly what I mean, check out the close ups here on the right (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00361G10S?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8#productDescription). These types of keyboards make typing a breeze, as they won't inflict wrist strain due to tall keys or keys that require more force to press.
===== It's Innovative =====
The touch pad is small, yet clever, allowing you to press down on the bottom-left/bottom-right corners of the pad to left-click/right-click (respectively), rather than wasting space by implementing separate buttons. The touch pad is also very touchable, as its texture and finish is matte, rather than glossy, making it much more conducive to swiping your fingers across than most of the other netbooks I laid fingers on. Most netbooks' touch pads were glossy, making your skin shear and resist the dragging gestures. I find such a feeling to be nearly as annoying as fingernails on a chalkboard! The other netbooks were also noticeably covered in oily smudges and finger grease, both inside the track pad and also on the wrist rest. Instant turn off for me on anything but the Dell! The Mini 10 on the other hand was smudge free, thanks to their use of an oil-resistant softly-textured palm-rest.
===== It's Brilliant =====
The display is crisp and bright, and it isn't too shabby outside either, though I recommend using full brightness when being used outdoors. My only complaint about the screen is its native resolution is a bit low for my tastes, which I hope isn't just a personal preference. I'd rather see more on the screen than to see things big and close up. However, this is par for netbooks anyway. You should look into this Sony (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PII4HW?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8) if you absolutely must have a higher definition display while maintaining the small form factor of a netbook.
===== It's Media Friendly =====
The built in HD media excellerator and the 9:16 ratio widescreen 10.1" display is great for watching hi-def movies on the go, with one very important exception: you must have an external DVD (or Blu-Ray) drive. I recommend this Samsung (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002C1BBU8?tag=a52-20&ie=UTF8) which sports a sexy look, on par with the Dell 's own appeal, without sacrificing functionality. Video playback is generally smooth and very few hiccups in playback have been experienced.
===== It's Stylish =====
You wont mind being seen with one of these, especially given the choice of colors, you can't go wrong in customizing. Dell really puts their feet forward in coming through on their philosophy of customization. Some people buy netbooks for the look. If you're one of these vain PC users, you'll rest easy knowing you've got one sexy looking netbook! I chose the white, personally.
===== It's Capable =====
The Dell Mini isn't exactly your run of the mill netbook. Sure, it can do what the others do, and I've typically used it for writing and surfing the Web (after all, surfing was the original presmise of the netbook, hense the name). Just be sure to keep your browser tabs to a minimum and not install too many Firefox extensions, and you'll be fine. But it plays media, including Web videos, Flash sites and Flash games, at a decent pace. As long as you aren't trying to multi-task by running several other programs at once, you should be just fine.
Windows 7 starters is an ideal OS for the netbook, and it even outperforms XP in several areas, so you can't go wrong in using it. The memory card reader is an added bonus. I didn't think it would be all that useful, but it is a life-saver when traveling.
===== Processor and Battery =====
The Dell Mini 1012 features the Intel Atom N450, a 64-bit-capable single-core processor supporting 2GB max ram. It supports Hyper Threading, so mild (but not wild) multi-tasking is possible, within reason. Try not to run more than two apps simultaneously for best performance and battery life. Intel Speedstep Technology is also built in, helping you save battery life. We averaged about 7-8 hours compared to the boasted 9.5 using the 60WHr 6 cell battery.
===== What I Loved =====
* Keyboard design - 92% full-size!
* Touch pad design - genius usability features
* Wrist rest - comfortable, remains clean/streak-free
* 3 USB ports - 2-left/1-right is dandy for using a USB mouse
* Windows 7 - Vista isn't optimized for netbooks, 7 is
* 9:16 ratio display - great for movies (see above for DVD solution)
* Keyboard + Touch pad design - seriously! It hits the mark spot-on!
===== Dissapointments =====
The things we would have liked to see were:
* 802.11n support - the future is here!
* 1024x600 resolution - would have preferred at least 1280x720
* 5400 RPM hard drive -would have liked a faster SSD (even if smaller)
I hope you've found this review to be helpful! :)

Transaction was great. Speedy delivery andcomputer was in great shape. 1 of the speakers was non-functional when my refurbished model arrived. This computer can be a little slow when multiple applications are running but I plan to upgrade the memory to 2GB eventually. Screen brightness, battery life, and al the accessory plugs are awesome. Mouse pad could use improvement. The weight and portability of this computer are great and it really stays cool if you let it ventilate. Great product for the money and great deal.

I bought my first portable computer in 1996 for $2,000US (a Dell laptop with Intel P1-250MHz), then a second one in 2002 for $1,500US (a Dell inspiron laptop P4-2000MHz/512-ram), and now this is my third portable computer an Acer Aspire One AOP 531H with Intel Atom N270 (1,600MHz), 1Gb Ram, 160GB HDD, an integrated webcam, Bluetooth and WiFi for only $350US --> WoW!
I just purchased this last week on 11/9/09. It was on clearance, and it cost me around 350USD. So far I am very happy with the overall built, features, and performance. I think this little netbook is nicely built. I was a little bit concern with the 3-cell Li-On battery that came with it. But I was wrong and I found the battery provides ample online time for me. I was using it with Bluetooth and WiFi on, and it was running for maybe 1 hour and I still have 1.5hr left to go. I think the battery might last a little bit longer if I turn off Bluetooth and Wifi.
The only negatives comments I have for this netbook are: (1) The left side of the netbook becomes considerably hot after 45min~60min use. (2) The built of the adapter feels cheap and the DC cord might not last a long time.
My first Acer product was a PDA and this netbook is my second Acer product. So far, I am happy with ACER ;-)

I had recently upgraded my notebook to a 15 inch wide screen which was too big to carry. I started looking at net-books to carry everyday. I didn't need much as I could remote to another system for any thing requiring more horsepower. I started comparing net-books. I wanted the newest Atom chip but didn't want to spend lots of money having just bought a high end notebook. I had used MSI video cards and Motherboards in the past and been very happy with the quality and a while back 2 MSI laptops had been purchased for our fleet and been noting but exemplary. This net-book fits my needs perfectly. It is lite and the battery lasts forever. I get a good 6 hours with normal use and some power save functions. I highly recommend spending the extra money to get the extended battery. I did an anytime upgrade to win7 pro and have had no performance issues. I was surprised to find that it can play Xvid and H.264 encoded movies without any issues. Even flash video works but not HD flash video but I expected this. The keyboard is easy to use and I don't find my self making any more typos than normally. The screen is too small to do any content creation with but this is not its fault. Over all this has fit my needs and I am very happy with it.

All in all, the 10005ha is probably the best all around netbook you can buy. While the toshiba and the samsung have better keyboards, and the toshiba has a better mouse...the samsungs speakers are much improved...each oft hose has major flaws (toshibas battery sticks out of the case and their speaker is on the BOTTOM...Samsung used a glossy screen that reflects direct light and becomes unwatchable unless shaded! Plus its a 270 prcoessor not a 280, and no BT).
If you want the biggest and baddest power netbook out there, the asus is it.

Just not THIS one. There are various flavors, all called 1005HA. You really WANT the bigger one. You get BluteTooth, you get a 10.5 hour battery instead of this measly 3 cell 4 hour thing, and you also get a real camera (1.3mp, good enough for skype chatting at decent level...the 0.3 that this stripped down model comes with I wouldnt OWN! Thats designed output resolution size smaller than a PDA screen!!! Cellphones have better cameras!)
Yes, I strongly recommend the asus...they make a good machine. Anything with an N270 or 280 really isnt half bad. Unfortunately newer netbookz will all start getting the cheaper slower Z processors...thank you for that INTEL....so if you are planning to do MORE Than email or chat...wanna run some programs...or god forbid MULTITASK, the newer 12 inch netbooks will all be SLOWER! The few already available all have Z processors, and all the future ones are scheduled to. Its a chip thing. Plus the N's like the 1005ha are ridiculously power efficient...hence the longer battery lyfe.

But a 1005 (or a 1008, less battery, but prettier with covered side ports...if that matters to you)
You cant go wrong with a toshiba either. I liked mine, the keyboard was great, so was the mousepad...samsung also...but you try all 3, and you realizee mostly identical after practice....but the asus has better performance in all the unfelt but measurables. longer battery, beter performance (slightly) bluetooth, Wireless N, its the one. At least for the moment.

Love this little netbook. Screen and imagery is terrific for its size. I also have an Acer Aspire One, which I also like, but the slightly larger screen of this works much better for me, and I also like the fact that you don't have to scroll as much. It will even run my powerpoint through a digital projector fine, except that it can't handle playing the imbedded video. Plays the video fine if not imbedded. The keyboard is comfortable, and I actually like the rocker mouse a great deal. I find it really easy to use and I like it better than the usual laptop mouse. This netbook is speedy for its size, and operates well on the internet from my use. Quite powerful for its size as well. So far it seems very well made and durable as well. In short, I like everything about it!

MSI U135-411US 10-Inch Netbook (Blue) Review

MSI U135-411US 10-Inch Netbook (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I almost jumped on the Asus bandwagon...until MSI came out with this netbook. The U135 is basically an improved version of the MSI wind 100 series. Chicklet style keyboard, bigger touchpad, and a 250gb hard drive. It comes with 1gb of intergrated ram and an extra slot if you want to upgrade (I used 1gb crucial memory; just need to unscrew the entire bottom panel...wont void the warrenty either)
This is my first netbook purchase and I am extremely pleased. All 10" netbooks have the same specs across the board so it really comes down to looks in my opinion. I didnt want an all black computer, or an all white one for that matter. I originally wanted this netbook in Red but could only find the 3 cell model with 160gb. So I ended up with blue. This netbook feels really soild, and the color is quite pleasing. Surprisingly it isnt a fingerprint magnet either. The 10" screen is bright and looks excellent from all viewing angles. I am able to touch type on this keyboard with ease and I have a full period and comma unlike some other netbooks where they are half sized. Using the function key for everything takes some getting use to but I'm welcoming the change. The trackpad and single mouse button are very nice. In order to scroll one must tap on the touchpad instead of sliding your finger on the edge...I actually prefer this way. My Hp trackpad is always malfunctioning with regards to scrolling along the side.
Battery life is probably this netbooks' weakness. Thats what appealed to me about the Asus 1005pe. 9+ hours of battery life would of been great compared to about 5hrs on here, but thats ample for my needs (college) and if push comes to shove I can always find an outlet.
I went ahead and upgraded from windows 7 starter to home premium and everything runs smoothly except Facebook games which run extremely slowwwww so I'll have to give that up but I knew what I was purchasing and its limitations so Im not disappointed.
This netbook comes with the hard drive partitioned in two. But with the help of a very well written Asus review I was able to change it into one 222gb hard drive without the help of third party software. It also doesnt come preloaded with a bunch of bloatware.
I hope I didnt leave out anything...all in all this is an excellent choice if your in the market for a netbook. If battery life is a major deciding factor for you then this may not be the best choice. I would highly recommend it otherwise.

This is a great little netbook. It's very attractive, light, and performs well. I can watch movies on it and obviously browse the web and other stuff. Anything you want from a netbook. The keyboard is very nicely sized and intelligently laid-out (it's actually the best laptop keyboard I've used ever). The touchpad is pretty big and works well. It also has multitouch features, if you are into those. I don't use them much, except to use two fingers to scroll. It runs XP, which I guess is good. Like many people I'm resisting the pressure to upgrade to vista or windows 7. The wifi is pretty good and seems to have a good range.
I give it four stars because the battery life is only rated at 4 hours and I'm not sure it's even that long in practice. That's much shorter than the average for a netbook, even in this price range. I didn't notice that when I bought it. Maybe I'll be able to get a replacement battery with longer life. This was really the only significant disappointment.
Other weaknesses of this product: the speaker is pretty good for a netbook, but it is located on the bottom of the machine, so it gets muffled in your lap or whatever you put it on. If you tilt it up it sounds a lot better. I think that's pretty common in netbooks, so it's not actually specific to this machine. Also, the screen only opens to 120 degrees or something. This is more than adequate when it's sitting on a surface and you are sitting up, but when I am lying in bed propping it up with my knees, I often wish it would open a few more degrees. It's a very small complaint.
It comes with a ton of bloatware, as all big name machines do. I spent a bit of time the first day removing it and everything has worked better since then. Clean and tidy. And I like how it has a backup of the operating system on a separate partition (it doesn't come with an actual backup disk per se...). Again, that's extremely common these days.
Basically there are no ugly surprises with this machine, so I recommend it, but even better would be a very similar machine with one of the 8 hour batteries.

NOTE:
Amazon has incorrect technical information for the CPU, is not a core duo, it's an Atom Z530.
You really need to analyze if the benefits offer by this little netbook are worth the money.
It was actually this or an Ipad, what actually tipped me into buying it is the full keyboard, and the fact that this is more or less a full PC.
If you are actually buying it for Internet stuff, it's perfect, that's the reason why I bought it.
It's super small, I think is the smallest netbook on the market.
That might be the greatest benefit or the worst, depending on what your looking for.
The benefits from the previous generation are worth the money you might save from buying the old one, there is a hardware key that will change the screen resolution, stuff will look bigger.
Accelerometer, it helps in some situations to have the screen on portrait mode.
Faster CPU and performance overall.
Default (factory installed) battery will last longer.
Touch pad works really good.
I guess that's about it... really don't know of I'm missing something, I've been using it for about 5 hours...
You can speed up the performance by deleting some of the extra junk that's always installed by default by the manufacturer, actually this is the computer that I've left most of the "junk" software that comes by default.
For internet browsing I've found that chrome is the fastest browser, provides a better experience, use F11 for full screen and Ctrl + and Ctrl -, to zoom in and out, this will also maintain aspect ratio
I find that the performance it's snappy,
I'm actually very happy with my purchase.In terms of actual looks, this device is super sexy :-) It really looks good and feels great.
I find most Netbooks fell kind of cheap, not sure how to describe it. Not the case with the VAIO P.
Something that I would've like... I wished the scree will "open more" to an almost completely flat position.
Speakers are really weak, however, sony will provide u with noise canceling head pones, they work really good.
Also, video playback is really not fantastic, I've had to downscale most of the videos, youtube is good using google chrome and hulu is acceptable.
If you have any specific questions, I'll try to reply and help out.

I got this netbook for Christmas and right way notice a key was broken. Called Asus and they told me to send it back (at my cost)and we'll replace the keyboard. So I thought how long it would take and decided I would deal with Amazon instead. So I filled out the necessary forms on the website order and new one within 24 hrs the new computer was in hand and ready to go.
I loaded Unbuntu AMD/64 32 bit will not work. Everything worked right out of the box. I was completely satisfied that a Linux distribution worked without installation of additional drivers.
Here are some pros and cons...
Pros
Overall size is perfect. The display is great and I can even plug into my HD television and watch streaming video.
Pretty good quality
HDMI port is a must
Processor speed is good
Lite
Battery life is approx 4 hrs. give or take.
Cons
Keyboard is soft - I like the feel of a solid keyboard
AC adapter into the netbook is very fragile - be very careful when plugging.
Overall I very please with the performance of the computer and love the fact that Linux works so well.

This Asus Eee 1018P-PU27 is an amazing 10.1" netbook. As a grad student in global health, I use this Asus 1018P for class notes. As a journalist I use it for interview notes, and for viewing short news videos. On-the-go internet browsing is a breeze.
This netbook is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Starter and Microsoft Office Starter, which I immediately and easily upgraded to Windows 7 Professional and Microsoft Office Professional. Spend the $24 and upgrade to 2 GB RAM memory (it comes with 1 GB.) This Asus model is significantly faster than others with its N550 dual-core processor; the two USB 3.0 ports and Bluetooth 3.0 add to its speed and efficiency, not to mention the optimized 10 hours of battery life. I get 8, good enough.
Consumer Reports rates the Asus #1 for 10" netbooks (Amazon offers a newer model, which I purchased). At this writing the Asus 1018P has received 18 international awards. I spent considerable time researching and testing netbooks of all kinds, brands, and processors. The most annoying problem was too-touchy touchpads, with cursors jumping around the screen. No problem, so far, with this Asus model. BTW, I also bought the magenta neoprene sleeve to protect and carry the Asus. Looks cool.
I'll be traveling and will need a reliable machine that can slip into my purse. The Asus 1018P-PU27 fits--not only in my purse--but also fits the bill.

Okay, so I have only had this computer for like a week so not a whole lot I can say right now. I got it out of the package (which arrived within three days of ordering) and yes it is small, but cute. VERY light, like the size of a Stephen King novel and very portable too. Anyways, setup was simple, took about 10 minutes for the OS to install and boot for the first time. It found my WiFi immediately and I just had to enter the password to connect. Very easy to install programs, but I only installed Firefox and Advanced System Care at this point. Comes with Word but it is the starter edition, which is basic functionality of word. I freelance write so the basic Word is good for me.
It seems to work like a charm, the webcam is nice and pretty good quality for a .3 MP. Took a couple pictures and they came out looking pretty good. The battery life is pretty good I am ranging about 3 hours to 3 1/2 hours, which is better than the 20 minutes I was getting on my previous but still useable computer. Screen size is just right for me since I am just using this computer for writing and emails and such. I have my bigger laptop for movies and other videos. I am keeping this one relatively clean and not installing much at this point.
Really nice overall, I can't complain too much except the background can't change on Starter OS. I choose to use Starter then maybe I will upgrade later on but really no need right now. I can live with the blue screen as the background. Typing is really easy, especially if you are used to smaller and more compact keyboards. Not a big fan of the touch pad so I hooked up my mouse. Plugged it in and it recognized it right away.
Definitely a must-buy for anyone looking for something small and portable but with good programs. Also the sound is actually better than the Toshiba Satellite that my BF has which is kinda cool. Headphones are always better though for smaller laptops. Totally glad I bought this one and hope it will last me a long time. Been wanting an Asus for a few years now and it seems to be as great as advertised.
Also, since it does not have a DVD/CD drive, I just imported files and programs from a flash drive onto this computer. Worked just as well and was pretty easy. So again, something I don't need at this point but if I need it then I will buy it later.

Toshiba NB305-N600 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue) Review

Dual core processor with hyper-threading. Much faster than the single core atom netbooks. I own a N255 as well as this one, and the NB305-N600 blows the N255 away. I have a 2GB Crucial memory stick coming this week, would have been nicer if Toshiba would have just had 2GB installed from the factory.
It's been a month since I have owned this netbook. I LOVE it, I use it daily now and don't even bother with my desktop anymore. It does everything I need it to, email, internet, itunes, pdf files, basic stuff. I installed 2GB Crucial stick and that helped quite a bit. Purchase the memory direct from Crucial... Amazon doesn't sell the right stick at this time.
The wireless N is great. No problems with it connecting, it does so very quickly too! Raise the screen/lid from hibernate/suspend/whatever, enter password, within 5-6 seconds I am online.
Be forewarned that Toshiba has a LOT of pre-installed software that is pretty much useless to most users. I plan to install a Intel SSD drive and full copy of Windows 7 in the next few weeks.
I am getting about 6-7 hours battery life, but I did increase the screen brightness to a realistic level.

I just got my 1015PEM on Friday. I created a USB install of Ubuntu and installed a 2GB DDR3 stick of RAM I had.
I'm running the latest Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick 64 bit beta, and it's fantastic! Everything works buttery smooth and is working right off (for those of you also using Ubuntu/Linux, the wireless drivers use the Broadcom STA drivers, just install via ethernet connection at first)
The keys and palmrests of smooth, not shiny, and extra comfortable to type on. I transitioned from a full-sized Mac keyboard to this little guy and had no problems adjusting.
The speakers are LOUD at full volume, for such a little thing. Far outshine my Acer 3810t with 'Dolby Experience'.
The power supply is superbly small.
I've been able to watch hulu, etc, just fine.
Last but not least, youtube 720p flash is a little jittery, but some updates in the future may fix this (this is after all, linux. Flash runs MUCH faster in Windows). Given that, there's really no need for 720p as the screen's resolution maxes out at 1024 by 600, so 480p looks (and works) just fine.
Finally, the battery life is outstanding :)
No regrets!
