3ware provides FreeBSD with drivers built into the kernel, which makes installing the OS onto a raided volume quite a bit easier. Using the 3ware BIOS, it was easy to setup a 4x1.5TB Raid 5 array (4.5TB roughly of storage space), create a 20 GB OS volume of that and proceed with installation. One note with using very large volumes with FreeBSD... FreeBSD's standard "bsdlabel" partitioner can't handle anything over 2TB, so if you run into that, use gpart.
Using (4) 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB 7200RPM SATA drives in a Raid 5 with a Super Micro P4SCI motherboard and a 2.4 Ghz P4 with 512MB of RAM running FreeBSD 8, I'm getting copy speeds for a 7GB file of about 5 minutes, or about 24MB/s.
One other thing that tripped me up for a bit, the 9550SXU MUST have a 3.3V PCI or PCI-X slot. 5V PCI slots (the most common type) will not work.
