(More customer reviews)I usually do a lot of research and read reviews of others when it comes to buying something. As someone who has confidence in Samsung's overall product quality, I went ahead and ordered this laptop sold by Amazon on Dec. 11, 2009 even without much input from other users as there were only 3 reviews available online at the time of purchase.
My first impression of this laptop when I took it out of the box was.. man it is huge. Also due to its width, it does not easily fit in my Tumi messenger bag with padding for laptop. (the size is very close to the 17" Macbook Pro except it is thicker and slightly lighter in my hands).
Here is a short history of my laptop use for your understanding of my view perspective on this review.
The largest screen size on a laptop I have previously used was 15" Thinkpad desktop replacement in 2000 when I was in college. I need it do run AutoCAD and photoshop. I did not like how it was so heavy to carry around. After 2-3 years of usage, the speed of the heavy desktop replacement Thinkpad was not an advantage anymore and it was too heavy to carry around just for light usage such as internet and word.
Then I came to a conclusion that laptops should be small enough in order it to be easily carried around. I thought, that way, even if the speed of the computer is somewhat outdated, I could still carry it around for light usage at a library or at a coffee shop.
So when I was in grad school from 2004 to 2006, I bought two computers, a desktop from Dell for graphic performance (I am an architecture major) and a Thinkpad X31 which is very portable. I still have them both. I recently upgraded my dell with a new 512mb graphics card and a new PSU and of course 2gb ram to teach myself Revit 2010. Now, the X31 is in a pretty bad condition since I have dropped it a couple of times and it was time to get a new one. I still prefer using an X series type of laptop over slow netbooks for their speed. Until it died, I liked the fact that it is still light and had no problem with light usage after almost 5 years of use but the screen was a bit small.
This time, I needed something that has decent performance.
Here are some of the reasons I went with this one.
1. Since I won't be carrying this everyday like I used to when I was in school, the weight is less of a concern (weekend library use and 2nd computer at home) so I preferred a larger screen. That was because the screen on the X31 was too small after I got used to large screens on my LG 24inch 1080p LCD monitor and my second monitor/TV Samsung 26" 720p TV (LN26B460).
2. It has 512mb dedicated graphics. (Macbook Pro I was looking at had 512mb graphics processor. Of course they are better and faster but I didn't need the best for now). Bestbuy has wrong video memory spec on this model. It says 512mb shared, not dedicated on their website.
3. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. (Dell Inspiron 15" only offered 64bit version for some reason). I wanted 32bit Windows 7 for software compatibility.
4. When I built a similar spec with a 15" Inspiron on Dell's website, it actually came out to be a couple of hundreds more expensive than R620-64G.
My review got cut off.. I will have to update it later...
