(More customer reviews)I have always used windows laptops by HP/Dell in mainstream/portable category (not high-end) as I am value buyer. I have not used Mac hardware extensively so I am not comparing hardware/implementation/experience/usability with Mac machines which cost more than twice. With that Prelog, my short version of review is. HP dm1z is an incredible value.
Overall build quality is more than what I expected. Keyboard feels great. Touchpad is responsive with support multi-touch gestures and decently sized. LCD Screen is where I am not impressed but it's acceptable. Connectivity is great. I have 7200 rpm 350 GB hard-drive model (not 120 GB SSD) and it's quiet and fast. Overall I am very happy with size of laptop, weight and its really portable. Battery life is good and I defiantely got 4-5 hours of video playback while steaming from my NAS over wi-fi.
There where many HP add-on software's on this machine out of the box. I have removed some of them. Processor feels adequate for Windows 7 Home Premium version OS but I might give a try and check if there is any other Linux build which is optimized and snappier for low powered processors but I wouldn't go crazy on that.
I was actually looking for a tablet with complete web experience (i.e. including flash support). Most web sites have multimedia content delivered through flash and I don't want to miss on that nor do I want to spend money on apps for every bit of functionality to make tablet useful. I would buy ipad2 if it start supporting flash or Xoom (or other good honeycomb tablets) if they are rationally priced for Wi-Fi version. None of these options are available for now. So third option was to get ultra-portable laptop which is what I did and I am very happy with dm1z
