(More customer reviews)I got this laptop delivered on March 2nd, 2011, with FREE 2nd Day shipping just for signing up for the Amazon Prime Membership. I have a 30 day free trial on that membership and will probably cancel before I'm billed.
Anyway, I had originally ordered an ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201PN-PU17-BK 12.1-Inch Netbook (Black), which was priced at $399.00. As I continued to review Netbooks and Laptops AFTER my order, I found this laptop for only [.../]. For $38.00 more, I decided to order it and return my Netbook when it arrived. As of this post, I can see that Amazon raised the price for this laptop to [..] so perhaps I got a deal and I'm certainly glad I ordered when I did however, competitors are now selling in the $460-$470 range.
This laptop is the best purchase I have made on Amazon so far. It came with everything I needed, including Windows 7 Professional, a number pad, excellent HD Memory, adequate RAM (3 Gig, upgradable to 4G), Processor Speed, and on average have noticed my battery life lasting around 3 hours using the High Performance Mode. It runs extremely quiet and cool. It doesn't really get that warm. This is a temporary replacement to a top of the line Toshiba Satellite that I have had for over 5 years which is on its last leg. As of right now, I'm still loading my programs and transferring my data files and have found everything working well. I'm not a big fan of Windows 7 Professional, but it is what it is. I liked XP for its simplicity and feel I will be going through a learning curve with this new OS, but I won't hold that against ASUS.
Cons and what this laptop doesn't have:
1. This laptop doesn't come with Bluetooth, but I knew that prior to my order. I have a BT Rocketfish adapter and simply plugged it in with no software. Windows 7 recognized it and downloaded the appropriate software from the internet and it works great with my HP Office Jet 470 portable printer.
2. The Number Pad is on the small side, since I'm used to a 17 inch screen and a larger keyboard on my Toshiba notebook. Because this is only 15.6, I will have to get used to it. However, IMHO the '0' button could have been made a bit bigger and find the right arrow key interfering with it when I use it. I will just have to get use to this and considering everything else, not a crisis by any means.
3. Limited upgradable RAM. I would have preferred to install 6 GB of RAM because I'm using Adobe CS4 Software on occasion, but this is only upgradable to 4 GB. Again, not a crisis.
4. The mouse pad has more of a rough feel to it compared to other laptops I've used, therefore your finger will not slide as easy. I find my finger dragging a bit more compared to my older laptop but again, not a crisis.
5. The speakers are at the bottom of the machine, and the sound tends to get muffled. Again, not a big deal especially if you are using ear buds.
6. ASUS Vault and/or Security Manger Software. ***DO NOT USE IT!*** I REPEAT, ***DO NOT USE IT!*** I found out the hard way and had to call ASUS Tech Support because two folders I encrypted magically disappeared. When I did a search, I found them on the D drive but could not de-crypt them no matter how many times I tried. ASUS told me there are problems with the sofware so your best bet is to remove ASUS Security Manager Suite and download TrueCrypt, or purchase some other software to encrypt files, folders, and partitions. TrueCrypt is FREEWARE but you will not be able to encrypt folders with this software. Only files and partitions and it can be complicated if you don't know what you are doing.
In conclusion I feel that for the value, you cannot beat this Laptop for the overall price -- even being offered at $489.99. ASUS from what I hear has a very good reputation when it comes to notebooks and netbooks, and because of this is why I ordered. This is my first time dealing with ASUS, but so far I am very impressed. Thanks ASUS and thanks AMAZON for another wonderful transaction!!!
