(More customer reviews)First I got myself the 27 inch i3. It was fabulous but I realised there was no point in saving a few hundred dollars on the one part of the system that could not be upgraded. So I got this machine - the i7 2.93Ghz. I am not a 'computer person' - so I won't be filling this review with technicalities. It strikes me that this is about as good as a computer for the home or home office could possibly get. I am an academic - I sit in front of it and write - sometimes for very long periods of time. I also have a good digital slr camera, a high definition cam-corder, and a 10 month old baby boy. I do not play games - I sometimes try to but I can't keep my interest up. So why is this thing so wonderful?
1. The screen. Notice in all the reviews people use words like 'gorgeous' 'beautiful' 'fabulous' 'breathtaking'? There is good reason for this. The letters I am now typing are tiny but I can read them easily (with the brightness turned down quite low). Well taken pictures of my boy in good light are uncanny.
2. Design. I don't think I'm a design freak - but I'm absolutely blown away with the simplicity and confidence of the design of this thing. Perfectly flat screen (no raised frame) - beautifully rounded back in brushed aluminium - no fiddly bits. There is no way this unit could ever go out of style. It is just to simple and clean. Earlier imacs were super-funky but they already look dated and over fussy - that's not going to happen to this. That is an extraordinary claim - a design that transcends its time. Hats off.
3. Speed. Almost no lag - makes every operation a joy - even the simple things like opening and closing programs - using a word processor - even tiny delays get irritating - there are almost none on this machine.
4. Noise - no noise - perfectly quiet. When it wakes up the room is still perfectly quiet. Sitting in front of a whirring machine all day is bad for you.
5. Track pad. This transforms the interface between you and it. If your fingers aren't sweaty it feels like a friction free surface and scrolling and magnifying and opening and closing and switching between open programs is a joy.
6. Keyboard. I had a big ergonomic keyboard before and it is not as comfortable to use as this one. I'm a typer and this thing flies.
7. Without knowing anything about it - I am confident that the technology in this thing is genuinely first-rate.
All these comments are non-technical - they're about the look and feel of the thing and the way it 'handles'. (The super fast processor does make a big contribution to this handling). PC's just can't begin to compete with any of this stuff. You may have geeky technical reasons to prefer them - but you can't have reasons which have to do with how it sits in your room - what it feels like to use it and live with it.
