Audioengine AS8 - Subwoofer - 125 Watt - black Review

This subwoofer is the perfect companion to the Audioengine A5's. The adjustments allow you to hit its sweet spot and not try hit the higher frequency notes. My only complaint would be that the volume adjusts completely independently of the A5's. So if I want to adjust the volume without screwing up my balance between my A5's and subwoofer, I need to do it with the computer sound card as opposed to the volume dials.
The A5's combined with S8 sound more accurate than my Definitive Technology 7.1 system using a Yamaha receiver.

Kanto Ipair5 Powered Ipod Speakers, Clean Crisp White Review

This speaker system is incredible in every way. It is very well made and should last for many years. They look so nice with their polished and shiny black finish. They look so much better than the picture on the amazon product page, that picture just doesn't do them justice. The acoustic cabinets are handcrafted wood and very heavy and solid. The woofers are made of Kevlar so they should be virtually indestructible. There isn't a cover on the front of the speakers so I would keep them out of reach of young children that might damage them. The back of the speakers are made of a metal. There is a plug for headphones on the back and a video out plug and wires so you can dock your iPod and watch videos on your TV. The two speakers are connected with a professional interconnect cable which is a very heavy duty cable which is similar to what you plug into an electric guitar and amp. It has many different faceplates which can be switched depending on what type of iPod that you will be using. And this system will charge your iPod as well. I did notice that the Amazon picture shows a skinny white remote with this system and my system came with a wider black remote. Judging by the appearance it looks like both remotes probably have the similar options but a different style.
Since Amazon doesn't list compatible iPods on the page I will list them for you.

This speaker system sounds amazing and I am so thrilled to own it. It sounds best when the speakers are either on the floor or at waist level. It also sounds best when the speakers are separated to give more of a surround sound. I would say these speakers sound a lot like Bose speakers but maybe a little better sounding. We have owned five or six different iPod speaker sets over the past several years and many of them just don't sound that good at all. The Kanto Ipair5 Powered iPod Speaker System has certainly raised the bar in my opinion and simply blows away most of the competition.

Audioengine A5 Powered Multimedia Speaker System (Black) Review

Audioengine A5 Powered Multimedia Speaker System (Black)

These really do deliver remarkably clean, powerful sound for their size, and they also do well at lower volumes. There's no shortage of gushing reviews for these on the web, so I'll just add a few tidbits of possible additional interest to prospective buyers:
- Each speaker is satisfyingly heavy, and the entire bottom surface is covered by a solid rubber pad to help keep the speaker in place when you're driving them hard.
- The speaker enclosures are silky smooth (no sharp edges or seams anywhere) and feel thick and well made. Overall fit and finish is lovely to behold. You can't help but believe that these will last for a long time.
- The large speakers are exposed (as pictured), but they're made of kevlar, so they look tough and feel tough, and you won't think twice about the lack of a speaker grille.
- The volume control is on the lower-right corner of the left speaker. It's a knurled dial the size of a standard button, and it turns with a nice, smooth resistance for a feeling of scratch-free precision. Ideally, I'd like to see the volume knob on the top of the speaker for easier access, and I'd rather it extended outward a bit further (it's a bit shallow). But tastes will differ depending upon speaker placement.
- The LED power light is on the lower-left of corner of the left speaker. It's a muted, cool blue that looks great when the lights are off. Not too bright to be a nuisance. The kind of blue light that you know is there but almost seems to disappear into the blackness.
- The power on/off switch is on the middle back of the left speaker, near the outside edge, so you can easily wrap your fingers behind the speaker and feel for the switch to turn it off. Not as easy as I'd like it to be, but not a big hassle. Still, if you like to turn your devices off when not in use, you'll want to place them in a way that allows you easy access to the left side of the left speaker.
- The USB port on the top is for charging only, not for audio pass-through from your iPod, but the makers helpfully provide several short lengths of audio cable suitable for connecting your iPod or other device.
- The secondary audio input jack on the back is analog, not digital, so you won't be able to take advantage of the digital audio-out option of an AirPort Express, for example, but the analog connection sounds fine.
- There's no remote control. Here the speakers suffer in comparison with some similarly priced systems that appeal to iPod users, but clearly the decision was made to divert the cost of that feature into creating the best possible sound at this price point.
- When driving these speakers hard for extended periods, the back of the left speaker (containing the power supply) gets very hot. Very hot. Seriously--you could fry an egg back there, so you'll want to ensure proper ventilation if you plan to rock out a lot. My only concern here is that the hottest area is the area surrounding the AC jack into which I plug my AirPort Express. Can the AirPort Express take the heat? Well, it has so far.
- The bass response is great on these, but if you want even more, you can always hook up a subwoofer, because a subwoofer jack is provided. What more could you ask?

Audioengine A5N Bamboo (Pr) 2-way Powered Speaker System Review

Audioengine A5N Bamboo (Pr) 2-way Powered Speaker System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got these at my local high-end audio store. My Klipsch ProMedias died a noisy death the night before, but I wasn't in any hurry to replace the speakers. I was considering ordering a set of Focal computer speakers (either the Focal CMS 50 Powered Monitors or the Focal XS Speakers), but had yet to pull the trigger on the purchase. I was also considering waiting for B&W to ship their new computer speakers, but they're just tiny monitors, not unlike the Bose speakers, and I was looking for something with a little more woofer power.
I saw these set up in a demo room, along with the [[A2B Powered Multimedia Speaker System]], so decided to try them out. Let me tell you, the sound quality blew me away, especially for a set of inexpensive powered monitors! And the bamboo finish looks amazing, too! High quality digital files are clean and airy, with clear midrange and adequate mid-bass. For even better quality, I would recommend adding a sub, for which the speakers have RCA (L and R) jacks, so I guess you could add two subs if you really wanted to. Or maybe an extra set of speakers. The volume knob on the front of the left speaker has a very wide range, so you won't need to go into your computer volume control if you don't want to. Speaking of volume, these speakers get quite loud. Definitely louder and cleaner than my old ProMedias, which were pretty good computer speakers for five years ago.
There is a USB charging port on the top of the left speaker, along with another 3.5mm audio in port. The back of the left speaker has the RCA jacks for audio out, and below that there is the primary 3.5mm audio in port. There is also a 110V power connector and the on/off switch, in addition to the fuse. The two speakers connect with an included 18 guage speaker cable (I'm guessing on the guage. It might be a 16 guage cable), which is about 4-6 ft long. The speakers are fairly heavy and solid. The bamboo finish is clean and smooth, covering the front and along the sides, top & (probably) the bottom. There is felt covering the bottoms of the speakers, which is nice. There is a blue LED on the front of the left speaker, which is not annoyingly bright like some computer accessories.
The only thing I wish these speakers had would be an option to plug them into USB instead of the standard 3.5mm phono plug, which could have turned the USB charging port on the top of the left speaker into an actual USB hub. Not a big deal, though.
This is a very attractive set of monitor speakers, and will look fine in just about any decor. As soon as I get a chance, I'll take a photo of them and post it. They would make really great dorm speakers, especially with a powered subwoofer of some type. These are akin to the baby Infinity speakers many of us probably got when we were in college or living in a smaller apartment, though of a higher finish quality. They would also work well in tandem with an Apple's AirPort Express to be used as bedroom/workshop/basement/etc... speakers, controlled through iTunes via an iPod Touch or iPhone using Apple's Remote application.
I never got a chance to hear the Focal or B&W computer speakers, and I'm sure they're quite good, but I doubt they're substantially better (if at all) than the Audioengine 5 monitors. And for many people, these speakers will look better. If you're considering computer speakers in this price range, I highly recommend that you check these out somewhere. You will not regret it!
Pros: Sound Quality!
Price (compared to other high quality powered speakers).
Fit and finish.
A non-proprietary option to add a powered subwoofer.
Cons: USB port is for charging only.
Analog input only, no USB input.
Price (compared to your last set of computer speakers, I'm guessing).
Line out (for sub) on the back doesn't change with volume knob.
These speakers get five stars from me. Outstanding.
Still worth five stars, but after hooking up my powered sub, I realized that the line-out jacks on the back don't change in volume with the volume control knob on the front of the left speaker. This means that to keep the same sub level, you'll have to control the volume from your computer or get a USB volume control knob like the Griffin PowerMate. Fortunately, I have a PowerMate, so I just hooked it up, installed the latest Mac driver, and it worked!
For some reason, the speakers seem to "sleep" on my iMac. For instance, if I come back to the computer after awhile, I have to adjust the volume control on my computer once to get the speakers to wake up. Not sure why this is, but I'm pretty sure it's the speakers and not the computer. This is slightly annoying, but probably won't change my recommendation. I have no idea if it's just my setup or if it's endemic of the speakers.

Audioengine 5N (A5N) - All of the simple but useful features and same signature sound of the award-winning A5 wrapped in rock solid and beautifully hand-finished bamboo.Bamboo is an excellent alternative to hardwoods and the dark bamboo used for the Audioengine A5N cabinets is not a stain, but achieved through a specialized heating process. As the wood is pressure heated, the sugar compounds inside the bamboo are "carbonized" which in turn darkens the bamboo to a rich caramel color. Awesome sound, great looks, eco-friendly, and panda-safe.
