Although it's more common in office settings, I have a Xerox 6360DN as my networked home printer and I'm very happy with it.
Mechanically, the printer is built like a tank - over 70 pounds - and it looks like it'll be running for a good many years to come. My prior printer was an IBM page printer (circa 1986) and all indications are that I'll be using the Xerox for as long. This is a fairly large printer, so you'll need a reasonably good amount of space for it. One caution is that this printer uses quite a bit of power when first warming up. I originally plugged it into the UPS that also powers my PC...not a good idea. Now I have it on a separate outlet and it's happy. The good news is that when idle, it's completely silent, so it's not a bother to have desk-side.
I have mine connected using the built-in Ethernet connection, which was incredibly easy to setup - the only unusual thing I did was to reserve a permanent IP address for it on my router so as to make printing a little easier from my Linux system. Otherwise, the printer has a built-in management utility, so you just point your web browser to it and with a few simple clicks, you can download drivers and change whatever settings you like. I routinely use my printer with Windows XP, Vista, 7, Mac OSX and Linux computers, and all work great. There's even a nifty email client built in, so you can print over the Internet using an email protocol. The built-in management can also email you when faults occur (such as low toner or out of paper), and there are lots of cool management statistics such as page counts and toner levels remaining. You can even order supplies right from the printer if you want.
On my Gigabit Ethernet network, printing speeds are very fast - even for complex graphics. I'm not sure it's 42 ppm, but it's not much less. There are also USB connections, although I've never used them. One thing I did was upgrade the memory...it uses standard memory modules, so this is a low-cost way to get the printer to spool more jobs or handle more complex graphics. Although I don't have one, the printer also has an option for attaching a hard drive, essentially letting the printer act like it has a built-in print server. There are also various optional paper drawers, letting you get up to 1800 pages into the printer.
Print quality is excellent, both for text and graphics. Text documents are crisp and clean, and it's easy to read down to 4 point type. I also find that even colored text is very uniform, with a nice, almost "raised" look to it. Note, however, that while it's great for diagrams and so on, it's not a photo printer...at 2400 DPI, photographs are acceptable, but nowhere near the quality of a true photo printer (I also have an Epson R2880 for photos). But then again, my Epson is nearly $2.00 per page for paper and ink, while the Xerox is more like $0.05 per page, so maybe the quality difference is something you can live with.
I'm happy to say that in the year or so I've owned it, I've yet to experience a jam or any error other than running low on supplies. I've tried many brands of paper with it and all feed equally well without incident.
Speaking of supplies, the printer comes with all the toner cartridges you need built in, however I've been going with the higher capacity (12,000 page) optional cartridges on replacement. They are fairly expensive (Xerox lists each one as over $300), but my 500 pages per month means toner lasts quite a while, so I'm rarely running out.
Highly recommended.
