(More customer reviews)The HP Elitebook XT908UT#ABA rocks. While I didn't buy mine from Amazon, I will give a little review here to help others. This laptop is built for 3D modeling and animation work. The trackpad has 3 equal spaced buttons essential to 3D modeling. The build quality from the latches to the keyboard and trackpad is the best you're going to get anywhere near this price range. (The hp elitebooks pass us military laptop specifications, which gives them a more durable feel.)
The ATI m7820 graphics card is one of the better things about this laptop. It supports DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4 while most graphics cards only support DirectX 10 and OpenGL 3... including the more expensive NVIDIA x800 series. If your 3D graphics program is tuned to NVIDIA, like 3DS max... you'll be a tad annoyed that it isn't smokingly fast, though easily fast enough to do work with. (In fact, 3DS max 2011 is still using DirectX 10.) If you play games, you will be pleased that games that run on this very new graphics card such as World Of Warcraft, Star Trek Online, Runescape, and Lord Of The Rings Online at very high settings, if not completely maxed settings. In addition, the graphics card is an elite 30bit color card that will display a billion colors through the external display port if you have that special type of monitor and special type of cable.
Overall, the graphics card's present power and newer technology support will take years... and I mean years to truly out date. So your dollar is going further if you keep it around. The graphics card is very new... so there are applications that don't work with it yet, like second life 2. Registry applications can be a nightmare, so instead of using CCleaner or System Mechanic or Norton and crying later, use jv16 powertools 2010 by macecraft and set the registry to the safest option which double checks the scan and all will be smooth.
The software is first rate including the windows 64 professional software installed on it. It will be necessary to update for a week or so in order to remove some scary screen glitching when you first turn on the laptop. (Update through the HP Support Assistant utility and Windows Update.) The Power Supply is barely UPS, so if the power goes out, you will have a few seconds to save your work which is nice. The power supply is also large, as you can guess, so keep it away from your laptop while plugged in so the screen won't glitch from the EMF of the power supply.
The laptop is large for a 17 inch and you may be wise to add a case or backpack from HP for TLC in travel. I don't see anyway to use this laptop in economy class on a plane... this is more like an Amtrak laptop. It has fit fine on every coffee shop table I've used it on.
Also, this laptop has monitor brightness sensing technology... this computer can adjust the monitor brightness automatically based on how much light it senses in the room. When this is seen... and this feature is rare... combined with the also rare anti-glare screen feature, you'll like looking at your screen for longer periods of time.
